Byrd Center Public Tour
Description
Join us for a virtual tour of the Byrd Center! This tour will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Register via Zoom to embark on a virtual tour of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, followed by a tour of one of several sites visited by our researchers. On the tour, visitors will have the opportunity to explore Scott Hall in a virtual setting, including the Polar Rock Repository, Ice Core Facility, and a sneak peak from inside the Class 100 Clean Laboratory. Then, led by Environmental Geochemistry Research Group member Chris Gardner, visitors will be "transported" to the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica to experience fieldwork. Join researchers as they collect samples, and enjoy the view of the Trans-Antarctic Mountains in this special tour. The McMurdo Dry Valleys is the driest place on Earth, yet home to interesting ecology, geology, and history. Registration for the tour is free and open to the public. Best for ages 8+.
If you require an accommodation such as live captioning or ASL interpretation to participate in this event, please contact Karina Peggau at peggau.1@osu.edu (email) or 614-688-8279 (phone). Requests made by March 31 will generally allow us to provide seamless access, but the university will make every effort to meet requests made after this date.

Hi there, You are invited to a CarmenZoom webinar. When: Apr 14, 2021 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Topic: Byrd Center Public Tour Register in advance for this webinar: https://osu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ui43_c8lTSO5YavqaeH9gg After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. Any questions about this webinar should be directed to the webinar organizer. ---------- Webinar Speakers Chris Gardner (Principal Research Scientist @BPCRC Environmental Geochemistry Research Group) As a Research Scientist in the School of Earth Sciences (SES), I am interested in applying geochemistry to understand chemical weathering in ice-free regions of Antarctica, Antarctic subglacial lake environments, tropical hydrology, and the intersection of urban areas and the environment. I am also a PI on our project to investigate the iron behavior and bioavailability in streams draining into the Southern Ocean. This project started in late 2019 with a field season at New Harbor Camp in Taylor Valley, Antarctica. A portion of my time is also dedicated to a professional society, The International Association of GeoChemistry (IAGC), where I am the Business Office Manager and oversee all aspects of the organization's daily operation. Stacy Porter (Postdoctoral Scholar @BPCRC Ice Core Paleoclimate Research Group) My research at Byrd Polar Research Center focuses on using Arctic ice cores to study the history of large-scale atmospheric and oceanic oscillations. I examine ice cores from Greenland and Alaska for linkages between the climate in the Pacific and Atlantic Basins. These cores also have the potential to reconstruct a history of Arctic sea ice extent which will aid in understanding how large-scale circulations will be influenced by the current reduction in sea ice extent. Karina Peggau (Program Coordinator @BPCRC Education & Outreach) Karina Peggau is the Education Outreach Program Coordinator at the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at the Ohio State University. Karina earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Earth Science at the Ohio State University. Her undergraduate work specialized in geology, water resource management, and climate science, and her graduate work focuses on sustainable development. Her current focus at the Byrd Center includes piloting afterschool programs for middle school youth, organizing public outreach programs, and advancing diversity in STEM. Outside of work, Karina is a graduate student studying City and Regional Planning with a focus on sustainable development at the local, municipal, and regional scales.

CarmenZoom is supported by the Office of Distance Education and eLearning.
