February 5: “Policing Black America: Criminal Justice in NYC in the Past and Past - A Dialogue with
Shannon King, Associate Professor of History, Fairfield University
and Carl Suddler, Associate Professor of History, Emory University
Shannon King is the author of Whose Harlem Is This, Anyway?: Community Politics and Grassroots Activism during the New Negro Era. Carl Suddler is the author of Presumed Criminal: Black Youth and the Justice System in Postwar New York. Both scholars research and teach 20th century African American history, Black Freedom studies, and criminal justice and the carceral state. Together they will discuss policing in the Black community, using New York City as a prism through which to analyze and problematize this troubling history.
