Monumental Changes: The Civic Harm Argument for the Removal of Confederate Monuments
During this event, Professor Winston Thompson and doctoral student Timothy Barczak will present their paper discussing whether American society has a moral obligation to remove monuments erected to honor leading figures in the Confederacy. They argue that there is a “civic harm” to the monuments being displayed that causes undeserving persons in the present to be harmed by a display supporting an ideology that dehumanized segments of the population. This harm to persons does not exist in a morally similar way on both sides of this debate, they argue. Moderating the discussion will be Dr. Jody Patterson, the university’s Roy Lichtenstein Foundation Chair of Art History, who studies public art and politics.
