Interdisciplinary Approaches to Safe Pain Management

In 2018, an average of 41 people died each day from overdoses involving prescription opioids, totaling nearly 15,000 deaths. Nurses and other frontline health care providers are uniquely positioned as members of the interdisciplinary team to identify opportunities for enhanced safe prescribing of opioids. Knowledge of guidelines, multimodal pain control, and take home naloxone are crucial for nurses to provide interventions and education for patients on pain management expectations.
