John Stuart Mill, Socialism, and the Open Society
The 2021-22 COMPAS Program on Markets and the Open Society hosts Dr. Helen McCabe for a conversation with CEHV Director Piers Turner about her new book, _John Stuart Mill, Socialist_.

Dr. McCabe is a political theorist in the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham (UK). She is the author of leading articles on Mill’s socialism, feminism, philosophy of persuasion, and his authorial relationship with Harriet Taylor Mill.

In _John Stuart Mill, Socialist_, McCabe argues that Mill’s commitment to a “qualified” socialism should inform our understanding of his long-term political project much more than is commonly accepted.

Her research background includes the history of feminism and 'ideal' marriage, and she has worked on the meaning, experience, prevalence, causes, and consequences of forced and servile marriage, and how to end it.
