Kaitlin, we think that because cytochrome bd has such a high oxygen affinity (~1000x higher than cytochrome c oxidase), UPEC uses this enzyme to scavenge oxygen in the hypoxic urothelial cell cytosol. So intracellular bacterial respiration depletes cytosolic oxygen, reduces the amount of oxygen available to cytochrome c oxidase, and induces a shift toward aerobic glycolysis.

Do we know how the ferric citrate system utilizes the iron from the ferric citrate once it is inside the cell. Have you looked into whether fes or another gene can remove iron from ferric citrate?

Excellent question Kaitlin! I have not looked into that, but citrate is a relatively weak chelator, so I don't think it would need something like fes to release it
